This is the second part of the evaluation Q1. The commentary over the trailer explains how genre and meaning is created by the combination of all the micro elements.
This is my final ancillary piece, the billboard poster. Reviewed and evaluated alongside in question 2 of the evaluation.
Q3) Audience Feedback
The background works with the style of the show, presenting the audience with the setting from the trailer, showing familiarity and common themes and ideas across the products.
The tagline shows the themes from the show and keeps the audience intrigued. Audience interest is generated by using key words like Blackmail, Lies, Deciet & Nightmare.
The ITV branding is consistent and obvious for the audience.
The coloured boxes around the tagline and title of the show look slightly unprofessional and not like a conventional poster.
The poster does not follow usual conventions, having the text down the middle of the image is not usually seen in posters. but it works well in splitting up the image and the background.
The minimalist approach to the poster works well in showing the audience a metaphor for distance, lonliness and isolation. themes of the show.
The inclusion of the two main characters from the main storyline generates familiarity for the audience who have seen the trailer.
The costumes stick with the style established by the trailer and show class & age of the characters.
The poster isn't overcluttered with text and makes it easy for the audience to pick up on the main themes quickly and easily.
The way the stars interact with the camera and are performing is consistent to the personalities set out in the trailer & represents the attitude and tone of the show.
The mise en scene works well combined with the characters, the Dark lighting that Paul (Jack Kane) is shown in clearly shows him as a villian but is a little too dark and would have benefited from being filmed with a some un-natrual light from a lamp or a small desk light.
The Parallel narratives work well together, complimenting each other with the tone and the lighting of the scene.
The genre is obvious and created through the combination of Mise en scene, lighting, dialouge and sound.
As the scenes are edited to have a darker tint to them and sets out the genre and tone of the soap. through the use of setting, a large house in a country setting, the audience is able to tell the class of the characters.
Audiences enjoy conflict and the conflict between the two main characters over the loss of their baby is well presented, clearly showing the anger whilst creating meaning by the way they are shown on camera, both characters shown is the same shots to represent their closeness as a family but then shot in seperate shots and over the shoulder shots to show them as apart and in conflict.
The themes are familiar to the audience and follow the main conventions of a soap opera, the northern feel of the soap is generated through the setting and the accents. the representation of reigon and class all effect the soap to make it more believable and easier for an audience to appreciate and follow.
Though the music is overpowering on one part of dialouge, it does fit well with the trailer, the music matches the editing and cutting of the clips to generate thought beats and make the audience engage with the image and makes the product more fluent and smooth. the minor key that the song is in matches the downbeat nature of the soap again creating meaning within the images.
Though the music is an instrumental piece it fits well with the trailer, but other products often benefited from lyrics that match the themes of the show, this would have made the trailer easier to relate with for some viewers, also the music used in trailers is usually more popular, or a top 40 hit to attract more viewers as more people are familiar with the music.
Aimed towards a 16-24 year old audience. Conventional target audience and the storylines, style of the show and themes are all suitable for this age range.
The storytelling is coherent and the audience is able to relate to the characters due to their age and the storyline, mainly the break up storyline, the other 2 are quite niche situations.
The trailer works well apart from the opening title card which could have been added in keynote, or as a title instead of the Jpeg I uploaded. when compared to the other title cards, the 'This week on George st' doesn't work as well.
The editing works well as it speeds up to increase tension, it gives it a sense that all the events are culminating and colliding. works especially well in the final sharply cut shots of the phones.
Could have benefited from a well known song instead of the obscure one to attract more viewers.
This is the final draft of my front cover, the distortion aroudn the edge of the picture has been fixed on photoshop and the text all moved to the left to fit on the page properly.
Conventional front cover and looks professional, the photography and the way the star interacts with the camera is good and creates meaning through the emotion on the stars face.
Headline anchored to the star, conventional and allows reader to see the relationship between image and headline.
Subheading relevant to the storyline, playing on pop culture by referencing a film for the title of the article, audience familiarity.
Branding is clear and consice , some of the ITV colours are also present in the colour scheme, promoting brand identity across all three products.
other stories referencing existing media products, more realistic and beliavable.
The picture in the bottom right hand is also from the trailer and is relevant to the main article.
Star holding the teddy hints at the storyline of the baby being taken, whilst the makeup generates enigma and mystery, as the audience do not know why the character is crying.
Conventional layout of the magazine, star has eye contact with audience and the stars eyes are in the top third of the page. Other articles and stories are set around the star to show the star as the most important feature.
smaller details like the institution (IPC) at the bottom left of the page, the date and the barcode all make the cover more realistic and believable.
as it takes influence from 'Tv and satelliete Week' it follows the conventions of this magazine, the title of the magazine is in the same space and the 'Best for sky & Virgin is lifted from this publication, all helping to make it look more realistic.
Language familiar to the audience, "Hot or Not" is a common phrase used to rate shows. Key, audience grabbing words are also included, 'Exclusive', 'NEW' & 'Latest'
Eliminating the distortion around the image makes it look neater and more professional.
Target audience of 16-24 year olds is targeted through the star being the same age as the audience, and referencing other soaps and programmes aimed at this audience again helps promote the soap.
This is the rough idea for my final Billboard piece, I think the text may need to be changed but overall it fits well with the conventions of soap billboards, as shown in Q2.
Final Ideas for Billboard ancillary, both pictures work well for the conventions of a billboard, but the text in the middle of the Billboard would challenge conventions. Both main characters are shown and there is ample room for adding text and branding.
The rough cut and first draft of my trailer.
Audience feedback -
Audio ducking - The dialouge in some parts is drowned out by the music, needs ducking. (Fixed)
Shaky camera - At 1:48 the camera jerks as it pans so it looks un-professional (Fixed)
Ending - No titlecard and does not follow conventions of normal soaps by ending with the channel card that shows the name of soap & time it's on (Fixed)
I have decided on this as my picture for the front cover, the background will be either a grey or black shade to mimic the downbeat nature of the show and the character featured. I am trying to replicate the style of the following cover for TV & Satellite week in the way the character engages the audience and the layout of other articles around the page.
This is the main plan for the ancilliary front cover, I have researched the style that I'm going to use for my cover, TV & Sattelite week. this style would match the type of soap, which is more serious than a usual soap. This classier style of magazine would match and compliment the soaps style. As evident I have planned out the places of my characters on the covers as well as the placing of the straps, banners and other magazine conventions.
Here is the planning for the script that took place over facebook, though this is the mostly the dialouge that was used, we did change some on the day of filming to suit the style and attitude of the trailer.
This was the rough sketch composed by the group to illustrate the basic layout of what would turn out to be the scene where Jack and Katie argue about social services having taken their child. changes were made to the camera placing and some of the dialogue but mostly remained the same.
This is the sketched storyboard for the break up scene, this is the scene that changed the most, we were planning on shooting somewhere completely different than illustrated on the scan, but we though the bench on which the scene was shot looked better for the genre than a car park. the final shot in the storyboard also changed, the idea of the car was discarded, as was some of the dialogue.
The shooting script for the phonebox/office conversation, basically kept the same shooting ideas as this was one of the first scenes we discussed in depth.
The shooting script for the first half of the break up scene, outlines shot types and movements of characters, the actual scene was vastly different to this.
The general outline of the entire trailer, including the shots we would begin and end with including the slamming down of the phone that formed the end of the trailer. character names / locations included.
A very rough sketch of the Front cover ancillary, the image we have actually used is different to the plan, instead of two figures on the front cover, I have opted to use a single medium close up of one of the characters, to mimic a more conventional higher class magazine.
The first and most in-depth storyboard for the Phonebox scene, dialogue, shot types and location are all noted and mapped out in detail. The end product does stray from this as we changed the location to make the schedule more manageable, but mostly this is the storyboard we used to map out our final product.
•The Non digetic soundtrack helps create tension, and the beats of the soundtrack fit the cutting and editing of the trailer, The slightly modified Iconic soundtrack makes the trailer recognisable.
•The trailer contains various Family Feud storylines, all weaved together.
•The older characters provide continuity for the older viewers of the original series, but the inclusion of a younger generation who they are also arguing with, offer new viewers a chance to get into the show.
• The helicopter shot from the original sequence is a reference for the older viewers, but also shows it is the same programme.
•The faded cuts in-between shots add a glamorous feel to the trailer.
•The trailer Indicates to the audience that JR has aged with the CU of his hands.
•Shot reverse shot shows the sons of the original characters, which the audience presume because they are shown to be arguing about the same thing.
•symmetrical shot of the two sons
•"My whole life I've been trying to put the Ewing name back on top" The trailer lets the audience know what's been happening in the time since the show ended, informing veteran viewers of the storyline progression.
•The zoom to the old house shows that the show is the same as it was in the original series and the quote "bobby was always a fool" presents us with a rivalry from the previous run of the show.
•"I'm sick to death of this family devouring itself over money" the themes of the series are set out for newer viewers, whilst letting older viewers know that the show is dealing in the themes of the original
•The title cards establish the themes of the show "Money" "Power" & "Rivalry" and also add to the tension already established by the music and edits.
Practice Trailer - Part of the planning as it allowed us to build upon the conventions explored here. The final piece of media shows imporvements on all aspects on this trailer, through research of other media products we were able to use these influences to make our own product better,
